How do I get my ear gauges to a bigger size?
When you want to get your ear gauges to a bigger size you will need to “stretch” them. There are many different ways to stretch your ears to reach your desired size. First you need to decide what material you want to use. Metal is the best for smaller sizes because it doesn't attract bacteria. Silicon is commonly used for larger sizes because you can bend them in and they will slowly stretch out the piercing with little pain.
The more common and safer methods
are:
Stretching Tapers: A stainless
steel rod is inserted into the piercing. The smaller end of the rod goes in
first and the hole is slowly stretched, by a small amount, as the wider end
of the rod is gently pushed through the hole. This method is very simple and
it minimizes pain.
Talons or Hooks: Similar to Tapers, a talon is
shaped like a half-circle. The points are smaller than the thicker part of the
ear gauge. It is inserted slowly and pushed to the thickest point. This method
works just as well as long as you make sure it is at the thickest point. Hooks
typically get harder to find as sizes increase.
Stretching Kits: Though these
are not required and rarely used, but it can be a helpful tool. This kit is
basically a taper, used to insert different jewelery. Seeing as a tunnel is
hard to stretch with, this kit will allow you to use the taper to insert the
tunnel. These kits are hard to find but can be useful in certain situations,
especially if you are new to stretching.
Taping: This method is when you add a layer of
tape to the same piece of jewelry between stretches. For example, if I was wearing
a 10ga tunnel and wanted to go to 8ga, I would wrap a layer of tape around the
tunnel until the desired diameter was reached and insert the plug. This method
is definitely cost efficient but not recommended.

Have a PROFESSIONAL Ear Piercer do it: If you don’t feel comfortable stretching your ears yourself, you could go to your local tattoo/piercing shop. They will charge you a fee and they will do it for you. This method can be VERY expensive. I would not recommend it for the smaller sizes. This would be an excellent choice once you get to the large sizes.
