How do I start the ear stretching process?
There are several options to start your ear gauging process. First off you should always use stainless steel or some type of metal ear gauge when gauging or stretching your ears. This is because metal doesn’t attract and retain bacteria as easily as wood or acrylic (plastic).

Get
your ears pierced at a 20ga, (standard ear piercing) and continue stretching
from there. This method will get you stretching in no time. But it will take
you longer to get to the bigger sizes.
OR:
Go to
a PROFESSIONAL piercer and ask to get your ears gauged.
Now you have some options on what size to go to. Most piercers won’t have
a gauging needle bigger than an 8ga or a 6ga due to the risk of infection and
healing time involved. (Remember the bigger the size you gauge your ears at,
the longer the healing time is.)
Also if you gauge it at a bigger size to start off, you increase the risk of permanent damage and infection. Stretching your ears is comparable to any wound, the larger it is the greater the infection/scar tissue chance. A safer size to start at would be anywhere from 20ga to 10ga.

are the typical ear gauge sizes?"
