How should I take care of my piercing?
Your piercer should give you a couple papers with information
on them about aftercare, if not you can always call them. Trust only a PROFESSIONAL
piercer, DO NOT trust friends! What worked for them might not work for you and
can lead to rejection of piercings or infection.
NEVER
TOUCH THE PIERCING WHILE IT IS HEALING. There is a lot of bacteria on your hands
and it is never good to put bacteria into a new piercing.
Piercing should be washed with an anti-bacterial soap 2-3 times a day. The soap
you use can not have moisturizers, be scented, or have anything else in it.
(dyes, ect..) I recommend using dial soap, just make sure it accommodates the
requirements above.
DO NOT USE RUBBING
ALCOHOL, PEROXIDE, OR NEOSPORIN!
Rubbing Alcohol kills new cells trying to rebuild and heal the piercing
Peroxide and Neosporin are designed to pull foreign objects out of a wound therefore
causing infection and rejection to your new piercing.
Washing your new piercing should be done very carefully. Start by running one
side under warm water. Place soap on your CLEAN fingers. Gently rub it around
the piercing/o-rings. Slide the piercing in and out slowly making sure you get
soap in the hole. You really shouldn’t take the piercing out unless you
have to. Once it is soaped thoroughly rinse ALL the soap off and repeat on your
other ear. Make sure you do not leave soap in the piercing because it can stick
to the metal or o-rings and can be painful to get off. It can also prevent the
piercing from “breathing”.
Avoid getting make-up, shampoo, conditioner, hair product or anything else into
the piercing. If you wash your piercing in the shower, take care of your hair
first, then continue to wash your ears afterward.
It is recommended that you give your piercing 1-2 weeks to heal before swimming,
surfing, or anything else. Oceans, pools, and spas contain large amounts of
bacteria and can cause infection or rejection to your piercing.
Give the piercing 1-4 months to heal completely.
(depending on: size of gauge/ proper care/ area pierced / infection / rejection
/ natural body healing time)
Your ear isn’t completely healed until:
| 1. There is no more crusty residue 2. No bleeding occurs 3. The piercing can be twisted and moved without pain 4. The actual hole isn’t inflamed 5. The actual hole is the same color as the rest of your ear lobe |
Jewelry shouldn’t be changed until the ear is completely healed. This
is because your ear is getting use to the new material being in your ear and
if you change it, it can lead to rejection and infection. If you lose an ear
gauge you should replace it immediately with something the same size and same
material (preferably metal).
